Hi CSM Neighbors,

Thanks to everyone for your interest and support of SCCF's Adopt a Beach campaign. I am excited to tell you that this year's donation from Chateaux Sur Mer is $12,100! That's our largest contribution to date, and $1250 more than last year. Thank you very much for your generosity! And from SCCF's Kelly Sloan: Holy moly, that is FABULOUS news! Thanks to your amazing neighbors, our sea turtles will be in good shape this year Thank you so much it means the world to me and to SCCF. Checks will be delivered to SCCF next Tuesday, August 3, and I will continue to pass along all communications from SCCF's Hollis. I hope you are all enjoying your summers!

Best, Robin

Hi CSM Neighbors,

It’s time once again to launch our Adopt a Beach campaign.  This year’s collection period will run through July 7, and we’re hoping for another great sea turtle season with clear waters and a record breaking number of hatchlings!

Old and new Adopt a Beach information:

·         The Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) started the Adopt a Beach program in 2017.

·         Chateaux Sur Mer was the first island neighborhood to participate in SCCF’s endeavor to protect nesting sea turtles.

·         Purposes of the Adopt a Beach campaign:  for all of us to be well-informed ambassadors and advocates for sea turtles who nest on our shores; to raise $2 for every foot of CSM’s shoreline (we have approximately 1900-2000 feet); to use donated funds (which aren’t co-mingled with SCCF’s general fund) for program supplies, including GPS units, measuring wheels, screening materials to deter predators, nest staking materials, educational signage, fuel for surveys, and a variety of miscellaneous supplies (buckets, mallets, data books, rakes, etc.); SCCF also uses the funds to purchase research supplies such as wildlife cameras to monitor coyote behavior around sea turtle nests.  For more information about SCCF’s efforts involving our sea turtles, please see the attached information from Kelly Sloan, SCCF’s Director of Coastal Wildlife.  You can also learn more by visiting SCCF’s website: http://sccf.org/our-work/sea-turtles.

·         Since 2017, Chateaux Sur Mer has donated $33,800 to Adopt a Beach, including $10,850 in 2020.  We are proud of our efforts and are glad to see other island neighborhoods joining us in supporting this worthy program.  And for this year’s campaign, we already have a generous donation from enthusiastic neighbors who were eager to get us started!

·         Your contribution is tax deductible and will result in supporting an established SCCF program that benefits sea turtle monitoring and research.

·         Per usual, we will receive periodic sea turtle updates, and all information will be posted on the CSM website.  To get a preview of what we might be seeing, go to our website and click on the Adopt a Beach tabs for information, photos, and videos.  https://www.chateauxsurmer.org/#home-section

·         The City of Sanibel’s website shares information on how to protect our sea turtles:  http://www.mysanibel.com/Departments/City-Manager-s-Office/News/Share-the-Shore-with-Sea-Turtles-on-Sanibel-2021-Nesting-Season-Is-Underway.   Be sure to inform your guests and renters that they should remove all beach equipment and supplies when leaving for the day.  Holes should be filled and sand castles etc. should be flattened (sorry!) so our turtles have an easier time making their way to and from the gulf.

·         If you are on Sanibel, you are invited to World Sea Turtle Day next Wednesday, June 16 at 3pm at the Bailey Homestead Preserve pavilion on Periwinkle Way.  SCCF Coastal Wildlife Director Kelly Sloan will present details of a research initiative to enhance our understanding of the conditions that promote a greater proportion of male hatchlings.  This free event requires registration:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/world-sea-turtle-day-tickets-158605925593

Please consider contributing to Adopt a Beach.  CSM’s campaign will begin with this email and run through July 7.

Your check should be made out to SCCF and it should be sent to:  Robin Coleman, 4771 Rue Helene, Sanibel 33957.  Checks will be held until the end of the campaign and then delivered to SCCF.

Thank you for your help!
